The Mark of the Maker and the Maker's Mark

20.05.21 - 04.07.21

VOLT is excited to present a collaboration with Eastbourne Studio Pottery that celebrates the obsessive, idiosyncratic nature of the studio potter. Referencing notions of mark-making, craft and authorship, this installation sees the gallery transformed into a working studio space, featuring an eclectic selection of tools and resources gathered over a lifetime of making.

Clay is a tantalising material, incredibly malleable and responsive to the maker’s hand, it is almost unique in its ability to be transformed into an infinite range of designs. Our history is intrinsically linked to how we have used this 'earth' both for functional necessity and economic or cultural power.

Marking pottery to define its provenance has always been an important distinguishing feature of studio pottery. Like the marks impressed or printed on mass produced ceramics from as early as the 16th Century, these marks confirm value for collectors but do not always guarantee authenticity - forgeries and false marks are commonplace.

The Mark of the Maker and the Maker's Mark is an interactive exhibition, intended for visitors to collaborate on. Certain elements on display invite viewers to interfere, experiment and surreptitiously make a mark of their own. During the course of the exhibition the altered works will be fired back at Eastbourne Studio Pottery and returned to build a constantly growing installation.

Pottery workshops exploring some of the techniques on display in the exhibition will take place at the gallery on Sundays from 12 to 2pm starting on Sunday 6th June. The workshops are limited to eight places per session and cost £10 per person including all materials and firing of your work, book your place here!
