To kickstart 2021, VOLT will be showcasing the work of recent RCA Graduate Olivia Sterling.
Sterling’s paintings depict snapshots of domestic scenes inspired by her experience as a black woman living in the UK. Often these paintings juxtapose body parts with domestic objects and British desserts to replicate forms of marginalisation and alienation. These works utilise a deceptively-innocent style reminiscent of traditional British comic strips such as the Beano which, when combined with a serious and often uncomfortable subject matter, generates a palpable tension and unease.
Within her paintings, Olivia Sterling creates spaces where absurdity and normality collide, asking difficult questions about race in British society and history.
